GEAR UP Professional Development 2017

A key aspect of the GEAR UP model is building capacity for school reform and improvement through the offering rigorous and sustainable professional development for area educators.

  • Professional Development is FREE to educators or administrators who actively engage with students in grades 6-10. 
  • Educators/Administrators must be employed by one of the following districts:  Alleghany, Clay, Graham, Madison, Rutherford, Swain, Wilkes and Yancey. 
  • If you are an employee of Ashe, Burke, or Watauga County Schools, you need approval from your district prior to attending.

Professional Development Workshop:

Educating English language Learners in the Regular Classroom

UNC Asheville's Gear Up Program and the Department of Education are sponsoring a one-day professional development workshop for teachers and teacher licensure candidates on this topic. The morning session will focus on creating a culturally affirming classroom environment, and the afternoon will focus on best practices for teaching ELLS and interpreting ESL scores. Additionally, there will be a post-assignment webinar on immigration policy on February 28th from 4:00-5:30 pm.
